I’ll never get used to Overwatch League’s team names. Like, I still find them strange and fictional. Or maybe I just got used to Team SoloMid, Cloud9, Natus Vincere, Fnatic, SK Telecom T1, Mineski, Virtus.Pro...

I always find the city associations weird for internet games.

It kinda breaks the fourth wall in some strange way.

You could just ignore the whole “video game as sport” nonsense and the problem will solve itself.

Eh, the whole “watching other people play games is actually a fun thing” camp has a good point, and I can see the appeal. That said, I think it’s easier to watch fighting game pros and FPS pros than MOBAs, as there’s less information needed to track.

I have no clue what you’re talking about. Overwatch is a game, right??

Looks to me like they’re all car names

Yes, and a professional league has come up. They went with the regular sports route of naming teams, which I find a bit strange because I just got used to clan names.

I gotcha. Probably hoping to make it more mainstream. Easy to remember/understand/relate names could aid in marketing purposes.
Could be interesting to see how this trend develops. Could mean big money if handled correctly.

eSports as a whole has already hit the jackpot , actually. And while I think the names can work, I still feel like clan names like Fnatic or Invictus Gaming and have a bit of direct-ness and tie-in to grassroots teams. Hard to describe but there’s an aspect to a name like those that something like “Manila Eagles” doesn’t have.

Rainbow Six Pro League still has those types of names :) (SK (the meme team), Fnatic, Liquid, Penta, etc)

Most every eSports still has those names. Overwatch seems to have gotten this as leftovers from the World Cup.

I still haven’t gotten used to esports in general.
